It follows a successful review last year of the planning service which turned around the time taken to determine applications and also streamlined and improved the decision-making process.

Having improved its overall performance, the council is now focusing on improving its planning enforcement.

Enforcement and monitoring involves the investigation of breaches of planning control and monitoring of development that has been given consent to ensure it is being constructed in accordance with the relevant permission.

A report prepared for the council’s Cabinet found that performance on planning enforcement matters was currently a ‘concern’ and an action plan is being put in place to ensure the council can respond ‘positively and proactively’ moving forward.

This includes reviewing the existing staffing structure, revising the enforcement objectives and continuing to work with other enforcement colleagues across the council.

A report into the six-month review of planning services will be discussed by scrutiny committee on Tuesday and presented to the council’s Cabinet in March.
