A controlled explosion was carried out on Alnmouth Beach this morning following the discovery of a mortar shell yesterday (Boxing Day).
A resident of Lindisfarne Road had found some very old ammunition and a mortar shell, which explains reports from neighbouring residents of police and bomb disposal officers as well as a cordon in the area around 4pm yesterday.
Local reports suggest that the resident found the items in Felton and brought them back to the Alnwick property before calling the police.
Specialist officers attended and assessed the items with the ammunition being confiscated and the mortar left where it was.
This morning, bomb disposal officers from Catterick Garrison came up and decided, in the interests of public safety, to carry out a controlled explosion of the device on Alnmouth Beach.
Inspector Dave Morrison, of Northumbria Police’s Northumberland Area Command, told the Gazette that at no time was any member of the public at any risk.
