Congestion and queuing traffic on A1 in Northumberland
There are long queues in both directions on the A1 to the north of Morpeth due to one-way traffic controls on the single-carriageway stretch.
The traffic lights, on the northbound side of the road near the Tritlington/Ulgham turn-off, are to allow for verge maintenance and tree pruning to be carried out, but the reduction to one lane, controlled today by a stop/go sign, is leading to long tailbacks.
At noon today, the northbound side had traffic queuing back past the end of the dual-carriageway section and the junction with the A697 and the northern entrance to Morpeth, while the southbound queue was tailing back to Causey Park.
