Concerns over plans for 90 homes

Fairhurst has been appointed by Grainger plc to prepare and submit the outline planning application.

The bid is for a mix of two, three and four bedroom properties, comprising semi-detached and detached homes.

The developers say that the proposal aims for a 15 per cent affordable-housing provision on the site, earmarked for land close to the A1068, opposite Druridge Bay Country Park.

The development will also include landscaping features and areas of public open space.

However, at Monday night’s East Chevington Parish Council meeting, members raised a number of issues.

Councillors said that the application is too big and that Hadston needs more one and two-bedroom properties, as well as bungalows. They were critical that the scheme only contains a 15 per cent affordable-housing element and said they would like to see more amenities for children in the scheme.

A previous planning permission was granted in 2009 for 86 homes on the site, submitted by Fairhurst on behalf of Grainger plc. This has since expired. The current proposal is for the third phase of residential development by Grainger plc in Hadston. Both previous phases have been built and occupied.

A Planning and Affordable Housing Statement, submitted with the application, says that the scheme will ‘ease housing pressures relating to a significant undersupply of housing’ and that 15 per cent affordable housing is in line with the Strategic Housing Market Assessment’s recommendations.

It adds that a children’s play area is not part of the scheme because Hadston Community Park, with a play area, was built during the second phase.

• An application has been submitted by Zoe Parris for land at Station Road, North Broomhil, to change the use of the site to holiday accommodation, siting five holiday lodges. East Chevington Parish Council wants the lodges to remain for holiday use.
