Concerns over direction taken by caravan park

His concerns come on the back of two planning bids, which were reported by the Gazette earlier this month, at the Swarland site, which would see 216 new caravans and a reduced, 12-hole golf course.

The clubhouse would be relocated and upgraded to include a restaurant, shop, gym and pool.

However, Andrew Brown said: “The proposals appear to be for other people rather than for the present owners, trying to attract holidaymakers not long-term residency which has traditionally been the ethos of the site and the one that the majority of the present caravan owners signed up to.

“I feel that we are being ignored and that another type of customer is being chased to the detriment of those who have invested a great deal of money in the initial purchase of their caravans and the expensive site fees of around £3,000 per year.”

He added that he bought his caravan due to the 18-hole golf course and the tranquility the site offers, while no prior warning of the plans was given.

Director of Percy Wood, Neil Willson, said: “As a business, we are delighted with our association with Northumberland and want to continue investing in and growing our business. We have to monitor the trends in the UK holiday market. That market has changed, in positive ways, with the growth in staycations. Consumers demand choice and that choice is always changing.”

He added: “We aren’t removing golf at all, but we are adding to people’s choices with the likes of a swimming pool. It’s creating more for holidaymakers coming to Northumberland.”
