Community unites to finish green scheme

Residents in Padgepool Place have seen an overgrown public area transformed into an attractive green space featuring an array of wild flowers and seasonal trees, after funding was awarded by the Community Development Fund managed by Four Housing, part of The Bernicia Group.

The fund was set up to support projects across north Northumberland. The not-for-profit housing provider is responsible for 215 properties in Wooler.

Managed by Groundwork NE & Cumbria, the project brought together local residents and other community groups.

The Young Firefighters gave up time to clear the site over the course of two weeks while Year 7 pupils from Glendale Middle School cultivated wild flower seeds during technology classes to create mini meadow pots and learn about seed dispersal.

The final batch of wild flowers were planted as part of a celebration garden party to mark the completion of the scheme.

Gillian Buchan, a customer engagement officer at Four Housing, said: “The Community Development Fund was set up to support projects that benefit and enhance the communities in which we operate.

“It’s great to see the green space at Padgepool Place looking fantastic following a real community effort.”

Margaret Thompson, a resident at Padgepool Place, said: “The project has been a great way to bring together different people from the local community to improve an area that was in need of some TLC.”

Jane Austin-Walker, senior project officer – volunteer and greenspace at Groundwork NE & Cumbria, said: “The project has made a real difference to the area.

“Not only has the scheme been a big success in terms of improving the look of the area, the community engagement aspect has been fantastic and it’s very much been led by local residents.

“It’s great that Glendale Middle School and the Young Firefighters got involved, they can take real pride in having made a real difference in something that has enhanced their local area.”
