Community events praised

Two community events in Amble to honour the Queen's 90th birthday have been praised by councillors '“ although it was agreed that the town's beacon lighting was a bit underwhelming.

The town held a beacon ceremony on The Braid on Thursday, April 21, followed by a family fun day at The Paddlers on Saturday, April 30.

The beacon event attracted more than 300 people, featured music from local band Come Together, cadets from the Amble and Broomhill detachments conducted a parade and raised £207 for Amble RNLI’s Shannon Lifeboat Appeal.

New town Mayor Jane Dargue said: We had a good turn-out and it was a really nice thing to do. The cadets did a great job with the parade.”

But of the beacon itself, lit from afar by a professional pyrotechnics company, Coun Jeff Watson said: “ The flames could have been better.”

Coun Helen Lewis added: “It needed at least three times the fuel in. It needed to go into flame quicker and longer rather than go back down to the embers. The beacon needs to be better organised because we will light it in 2018.”

The Paddlers Park fun day also attracted a decent turnout. It gave people the chance to see the transformed facility.

The Radcliffe Club provided entertainment such as games and inflatables and representatives from Park Leisure showed people how to use the trim-trail equipment.

Further equipment is set to be purchased for Paddlers Park, with adult swings one of the things mentioned, plus binoculars/telescopes, allowing people to see nearby Coquet Island more clearly.
