In Rothbury, helpers collected two bags of glass bottles and jars, several bags of ordinary waste and several more of recyclable items.

The weirdest object was a car wheel, and four chairs which Fran Elson fished out of the River Coquet. Pictured above is Katie Scott, queen of the rubbish, with the rubbish and Rothbury Rubbish Friends.

Around 30 people joined in, including representatives from Alnwick in Bloom, Alnwick Chamber of Trade, Alnwick Area Friends of the Earth and 1801 (Alnwick) Squadron Air Cadets, as well as town councillors, town-council officers and the public.

The main focus was on key areas of the town, including the Roxburgh Place car park, the bus station, Bondgate cobbles and Greenwell Lane, and involved litter-picking, sweeping, weeding and general tidying.

Staff from McDonald’s also did an extra clean up on the Shilbottle Road.

Alnwick Mayor Alan Symmonds said: “It is always heart-warming when people take pride in their town. Just looking around the town it’s clear to see what was done over the two days and the town certainly benefitted from the extra tidy.

“On behalf of the town council, I would like to say a big thank you all those who took part in the tidy ups. It’s a great way of getting the town ready for the visitors who will arrive in the town over the Easter period.”

The tidy-up in Alnwick was supported by Northumberland County Council.
