COLUMNIST: Book will be fascinating

I read with interest the column by Tony Willis on Ian Brady and Myra Hindley (Northumberland Gazette, April 28).

I first met Tony Willis in 1969 when I was posted to Harrogate as a young police constable, fresh out of training school.

Tony was a detective in those days.

He left the area in about 1975, and as far as I was aware, was headed for Australia.

I often wondered what happened to him.

I moved back to Alnwick for my retirement in 2015 and a few weeks later, through your pages, saw that Tony was living about 12 miles from me.

We made contact and have met up for a coffee, so in that respect, thanks to the Gazette.

With regard to his column, the days of the Moors Murders and the Yorkshire Ripper bring back vivid memories, and many stories will remain in police circles for ever.

However, those that are no doubt in Tony’s book will make fascinating reading for the general public and I, for one, look forward to making my purchase.

Every policeman has a book in him, they say, but not everyone can articulate his experiences as I am sure Tony can.
