The speciality coffee company, which has been based in Spittal since 2015, has recently expanded and relocated its roastery to the Ramparts Business Park.

In addition to housing their roasting and packaging operations, the new headquarters will also feature a takeaway coffee bar that will be open weekdays from 7am until noon.

Owner and chief roaster Dan Inglis said: “We’ve seen a steady increase in business over the past few years and decided to take the leap and move to a larger warehouse that could accommodate our expansion.

He began roasting beans in the Spittal workshop three years ago.

“It’s a bit mad to look back and think about how far we’ve come since I started, but this is the result of hard work, and the support of our family, friends, the local business community and our fantastic customers who have always appreciated what we are trying to do,” said Dan.

Northern Edge Arabica coffee beans are imported from all around the world and they now offer nine unique blends for customers to choose from.

Dan says the company have always been committed to sourcing ethical coffee and paying careful attention to the environmental impact of their operations.

“We work with a green bean supplier to support coffee farmers committed to sustainable practice, and where possible, our packaging is compostable or biodegradable.”

He thinks you can taste the difference.

“People often ask me what the difference is between our coffee and any other brand and I tell them that first and foremost it’s about how we roast - we do it in small batches, by hand, several times a week to ensure optimal freshness and the best quality - we don’t over-roast either because we like to ensure we bring out the flavour of the bean.”

He also thinks his focus on working with the local business community has helped Northern Edge go from strength to strength.

“I still personally deliver coffee to the cafes, restaurants and retailers who stock and serve our coffee and I think those personal relationships are so important - I’m from Berwick and I really care about the town and local business community - I want to do my bit to see us all succeed together.”

Dan says that attitude is largely reciprocated - Northern Edge’s announcement about the move on social media was met with an outpouring of congratulations and support by local business owners and customers.

“It’s the kind of thing that makes you confident you’re on the right track, and grateful to be where you are, doing what you love,” he says.

Northern Edge Coffee are now located at Unit 3, Samphire Court, Windmill Way, Ramparts Business Park, Berwick Upon Tweed, TD15 1TB. Their takeaway coffee bar will be open every weekday from 7am until noon and customers are welcome to pop in to purchase beans and ground coffee from the Ramparts Coffee Bar.
