Services arrived on scene to find the group had walked around from the beach to the rocks by Sharpness Point but had then been cut off as the tide came in.

Three of the adults, the child and the dogs had been able to make their way up the cliff and over a fence and no longer required any assistance.

But the remaining two adults had been unable to use this route.

Sea conditions meant a water extraction would be too challenging and the cliff face at Sharpness Point is known to be unstable, so Tyne & Wear Fire & Rescue Service were called to attend the scene to assist.

They were able to lower a ladder down to the stranded adults and extract them to a position of safety.

After the initial callout at 1.39pm, all services were stood down at 3pm.
