The service, which rescues hundreds of severely injured or ill patients every year, is Jan’s chosen charity in her captain’s year.

GNAAS operates three air ambulance helicopters across the North East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria, carrying specialist trauma doctors and paramedics to provide pre-hospital care at the scene of accidents, before transporting patients to hospital.

It responds to about 1,000 call-outs each year, but relies on public donations for funding to survive.
