Youngsters looking for a new challenge are being urged to visit their library.

A Christmas Reading Challenge is under way from now until January 6, in which children can unlock an online video once they’ve borrowed three books from a library.

The new event follows the Summer Reading Challenge which introduced children to fantastical creatures from the world of legend and mythology.

Coun Val Tyler, policy board member for community infrastructure and culture, said: “To keep children’s imagination alive, they need to keep reading, and what nicer way than cuddling up on a cold winter’s day with a book.“

All children need to do is log on to and add the details of the books they have got out and once they have read three, they will receive a badge and a secret video.

A certificate is available for all children with a print-off of their profile, as proof of the books they have read.
