CENTRES: In need of more volunteers

The Royal Voluntary Service (formerly the WRVS) provides a number of services in North Northumberland.

There are social centres and lunch clubs for older people in Alnwick, Rothbury and Wooler, and people who attend are offered transport, when possible, by voluntary drivers.

Rothbury and Wooler Centres take place on a once weekly basis, whereas Alnwick meets three times a week.

All three centres offer a hot meal followed by a variety of activities, such as stimulating games, entertainment or craft work.

The Rothbury Centre meets on Tuesdays, and the Wooler Centre on Thursdays.

Alnwick is a little different. On Mondays and Fridays a hot meal is provided, followed by tea and biscuits. On Wednesdays there is also a coffee morning and, like the other two centres, lunch is followed by a wide variety of activities.

The RVS offers support through a member of staff, but much of the work is undertaken by volunteers, and we desperately need more help in all three centres.

Volunteers can assist serving and clearing up after meals, assisting with activities and helping with mobility. Volunteer drivers are also needed.

Most of all, volunteers provide a cheerful, supportive presence and social contact for older people, which is especially important for those from more rural areas who are often isolated at home.

Travel expenses are paid and voluntary drivers also get their travel expenses reimbursed.

Why not come along and see how you can help?
