A special thanksgiving service was held on Saturday, May 10, to honour 20 years of Women Priests’ Ministry in the Diocese of Newcastle.

The ceremony took place at the city’s St Nicholas’ Cathedral and those to attend the event included Velda Nicholson, of Amble, Angela Treweeks, from Rothbury, Eileen Noble, who was based in Cramlington, and Gillian South, who previously served in Amble.

Rev Nicholson, who is retired but acts as a stand-in around village churches in north Northumberland, said that it was a special day.

She added: “It was a nice service. It was a celebration and a look back over many years.”

The Right Rev Ingeborg Midttømme, who is the Bishop of Møre in the Lutheran Church of Norway, presided over the service.

The ceremony gave thanks to the contingent who were ordained in 1994. Becoming priests came, for some of the women, after many years of waiting to fulfil their calling.

The service also remembered those who have passed away, including Janet Brearley, who was vicar at Warkworth.
