A MAN and woman were forced to abandon their car and wade across the flooded Holy Island causeway after flouting the safe crossing times by over two hours.
Humber Coastguard called for the immediate launch of the Seahouses inshore lifeboat on Sunday, after the couple were spotted stranded and up to their knees in water at just after 3pm.
The last safe crossing time was 12.50pm.
As the lifeboat was on its way, local Coastguards reported that the pair had made it safely to shore on Holy Island and stood the rescue down.
A spokesman for the RNLI crew said: “This was yet another incident where a car had attempted to cross the flooded causeway contrary to the safe crossing times.”
