CATS: The misuse of claw covers

editorial image

I would like to raise concerns on behalf of Cats Protection about the use of claw covers.

This trend, which involves gluing a cover onto each claw, prevents cats from expressing natural behaviour, including claw retraction, scratching and leaving marks and scent signals.

This may lead to behavioural problems and place a cat at risk by reducing its natural defences, which could mean the owner is failing its welfare needs and could be prosecuted. Should the claw covers harm the cat, they may have also committed the offence of causing “unnecessary suffering”.

The only situation in which it would be appropriate to fit caps is short-term for diagnosed problems while the underlying condition is being addressed.
