A casualty has been airlifted to hospital after a serious crash on the A697 in Northumberland this afternoon.

The incident happened near to Longhorsley and involved a large goods vehicle and a car, the Gazette has been told.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) was called at 4.50pm and three fire engines - two from Pegswood and one from Rothbury - as well as a Specialist Rescue Unit from West Hartford attended the scene. A spokeswoman for the NFRS said that hydraulic cutting equipment was needed.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said that there was an on-duty paramedic on scene, but an ambulance was also sent. Support was requested for the Great North Air Ambulance, which took one casualty to the Newcastle RVI hospital.
