CAR PARK: Give credit where it's due

I was interested to read about the new car park at Newton-by-the-Sea, (Northumberland Gazette, February 16).

As a resident, I have grown to appreciate the considerable involvement of the parish council in matters relating to the wellbeing of this community.

I therefore feel that further clarification of the extent and nature of the parish council’s role in the construction of the car park is required to provide a balanced account.

The article seemed to imply that Coun Kate Cairns assumed the primary role in establishing the car park, from its conception to construction.

I am concerned that there was scant acknowledgement of the not-inconsiderable input of the parish council over the two-and-a-half year period. This included the preparation of the bid in securing funding, liaison with Northumberland County Council, and carrying out site visits to discuss technical issues.

The car park has been long-awaited and is the result of hard work and dedication by a number of representatives of the parish council.

I feel that it is incumbent upon residents to ensure that credit is given where it is due, not least because the work of parish councils is vital to the success of our communities.
