A brave dad-of-three who has battled cancer has inspired a donation from a building society’s foundation to the charity that supported him and his family.
Mark Ryder, of Shilbottle, was diagnosed with leukaemia in March, but is now, thankfully, in remission.
Since getting the good news, Mark, who has three daughters, aged 12, five and two, has thrown himself into raising money for Maggie’s Centre, based in the grounds of Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital.
He is a member of Shilbottle Phoenix Charities, which supports Maggie’s Centre as well as a number of other local good causes.
He approached his local branch of Yorkshire Building Society in Alnwick who applied to the Yorkshire’s Charitable Foundation for a £1,512 donation, which will fund new furniture.
Mark said: “The staff at Maggie’s Centre were fantastic – not just for myself, but for my family as well.
“The centre is built like a house to put you at ease and everyone is so supportive and understanding about what you’re going through.”
Staff at the Alnwick branch, on Bondgate Within, were keen to do what they could to support Mark’s fund-raising efforts.
Branch manager Daniel Tyler said: “We’re delighted the Foundation was able to help such a worthwhile cause.”
