She raised the issue during a debate in the Commons on transport in the North East.

Geoff O’Connell, chairman of the Belford Rail Users’ Group, said: “We very much welcome Mrs Trevelyan raising this matter for us in the House of Commons.

“We have been pushing for a platform to be built for many years now and we still believe it has great potential to boost the local economy by bringing more people to Belford and enabling people to commute to Tyneside by train.”

Some funding for the project has been earmarked for several years, but the scheme has stalled.

“We’re still waiting for information on some issues,” said Mr O’Connell. “However, we remain convinced the demand is there. We believe up to 50 people a day would use the facility rather than drive on the A1.”
