Calling for unsung heroes

Those who make Northumberland ‘such a fantastic place to live, work and visit’ will get their moment in the spotlight this autumn.

The Pride of Northumberland Awards are back for 2012 and we need readers to nominate their local heroes.

Organised by Northeast Press – publishers of the Northumberland Gazette and sister papers the Morpeth Herald and News Post Leader – and Tweeddale Press, which produces the Berwick Advertiser, the awards pay tribute to the courage, bravery, determination and dedication to the unsung heroes of the county who have gone above and beyond the call of duty and overcome massive hurdles.

The glittering awards ceremony will take place at The Alnwick Garden on Thursday, September 13.

Major sponsors this year are Northumberland County Council, Banks Group, Northumbrian Water and NBSL.

The categories for nominations are Child of Achievement, Child of Courage, Community Champion, Community Group, Safer Community, Fund-raiser of the Year, Green Champion, Student of the Year and Sporting Achievement.

All categories are open to nominees over the age of 16, with the exception of the children’s awards.

Three individuals or groups will chosen to attend the final.

Jeff Reid, leader of Northumberland County Council, said: “We’re delighted to be involved in the Pride of Northumberland Awards again this year and really looking forward to meeting more inspiring people from across the county.

“Northumberland is a unique place with a strong sense of community and these awards give our own local heroes the chance to shine.

“Last year the standard of entries was incredibly high and I’m sure we’re in for another exciting competition this year.

“I know that our residents are so proud to live in this county which is why it’s important to recognise the work of those people who help make Northumberland such a fantastic place to live, work and visit.”
