Call for parking permits due to struggle to park outside homes

Residents in an Alnwick street are calling for the introduction of a residents' parking scheme as they struggle to park due to spillover from the town centre.

At last Thursday’s meeting of Alnwick Town Council, two residents from Monkhouse Terrace attended to air their concerns.

Paul Leighton said: “We live in the town centre and what we really want is residents’ parking.

“We have to park two or three streets away. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

“We have to park in King Street or Lisburn Terrace, but then we are taking other people’s places, it’s not right.”

The pair explained that as theirs is one of the first streets that people come to if they can’t get parked in the town centre, it is essentially used as overflow parking.

Mr Leighton added that there are bed and breakfasts/guesthouses in the area which tell visitors they can park there.

“We have got people who go to Morrisons parking in our street, which I don’t get because it has a car park,” he said.

“Dispensary Street has residents’ parking and all of the residents (of Monkhouse Terrace) are happy to pay for a permit.”

The town council is not responsible for parking, the county council is, so members suggested that Mr Leighton and the other residents raise the issue with the council again – a letter signed by the residents was sent last year – and also directly with the consultants who are currently carrying out a parking survey in Alnwick.

The town council has a meeting with the county council on the survey soon so will also raise residents’ concerns.
