A north Northumberland butchers took home two golds from a prestigious international event.
R Turnbull & Sons Butchers in Alnwick struck gold with its maple-cured pancetta and apricot and rosemary dry-cured bacon chops at Meat & Fresh Expo, a leading event for the European fresh-food sector staged in Kortrijk, Belgium.
Maple-cured pancetta is a new product created by the shop’s longest-serving and newest butchers – David Green, who has worked at Turnbull’s for more than 30 years since leaving school, and Daniel Turnbull, 22-year-old son of owner Mark Turnbull.
It comprises locally-sourced belly pork, dry-cured in-house, then covered in maple syrup and oak-smoked by ‘kipper kings’ Robson’s of Craster.
The apricot and rosemary dry-cured bacon chops’ recipe is the brainchild of Mark Turnbull, again using local pork.
Turnbull’s also received a silver award for its beef steak burgers, which are flavoured with wholegrain mustard, Worcester sauce and flat-leaf parsley.
