A nursing agency which has only been running for two years has won a top industry award for its work.
Great Britannia Care was opened by Tracy Surtees and her team in Alnwick in 2012.
And at the beginning of last month, after a year of organising the business from home, Tracy set up an office on Bondgate Without in the town.
Now the company has been given the Most Outstanding Nursing Agency in the UK award at the Seniors Over 50s Housing Awards.
Tracy picked up the award at the Westbury Hotel in Mayfair, London, and was ‘gobsmacked’ that her small business had won.
The company provides nursing and care staff to homes in Alnwick and didn’t know that Great Britannia had been nominated for the award.
Esmonde Crawley, editor of the Seniors Over 50s Housing groups magazine, put the company forward after visiting the area.
He saw an article in the Gazette about the company’s move to its new office and contacted nursing homes to which Great Britannia sends its staff.
And judges were so impressed with the response that they announced the business as the winner.
Tracy said: “We never expected anything like it at all.
“I’m still gobsmacked it is just so unreal to have such a little company like us competing against the rest of the UK and being given the award.
“To be nominated for the award in itself is an absolute achievement.
“To win is astounding and something we hoped to achieve in our lifetime.
“We are so proud of our team, their hard work and loyalty.
“We pride ourselves in providing local staff for local homes creating a much-needed boost to our economy.
“If we can replicate what we have achieved in to other communities, we can play an important role in providing greater health care.”
