It is the month of April but for one girl, she’s had more than daffodils blossoming to make her year.
April Bowden started 2015 on a much better note than last year.
The budding marketing graduate was made redundant from a PR firm in August, 2014, but used it as a catalyst to start her own social media and marketing company.
The 26-year-old now has more than 10 clients after her business took off when she spotted a gap in the market for Northumberland holiday lets and businesses who needed an online presence.
“Hiring a marketing professional is so expensive, I just thought I’d offer a low cost alternative,” said April.
“In the space of two months I had about six or seven clients, all based in Northumberland.
“I work with Outcook cookery school and Turnbull’s so it’s very much small to medium-sized businesses and I help them find their voice.”
April’s work includes social media, marketing plans and strategies, photography and graphic design.
She also has her own blog which allows her to write for Visit Northumberland and NFU Country magazine.
The idea of Play The Field came from the name of her university dissertation piece, focusing on getting women into outdoor sports.
From there, the dream has become a reality. Her university, Northumbria, has even helped several years down the line.
“Northumbria are helping me quite a lot, they’re providing me with an office space if I’d like it.
“They basically said ‘write a wish list, tell me anything you want and we can try do it’ so it’s good to have confidence behind me and people willing to help.
“It’s amazing how many businesses have said how much they’ve loved the business name, which has given me such confidence.”
Looking to the future April said she wants to ‘grow organically’ and looks to employ some more help in the future.
“Some of the people I work for are in the older demographic, they’ve got their house, they’re retired and they want to buy and hire out another property.
“They don’t necessarily have the time to write tweets or use Facebook so they hire me and it works.”
