Land a place on free commercial fishing course in Amble

Places are up for grabs for the Introduction to Commercial Fishing course which has previously led to trainees landing jobs in the industry.

Last year, Anglo-Scottish Seafish & Seafood Training Association (ASSTA) ran three training initiatives in Amble.

It is hoped that the training will boost the number of new entrants coming into the industry.

Now, 10 positions are available on a first-come, first-served basis for another round of tutoring, which takes place over three weeks.

The free-to-attend course is financed by the Seafish Authority, European fisheries Fund and the Marine Management Organisation.

Dennis Osborne, managing director of ASSTA, said the course offers the perfect opportunity for anyone who was thinking of going to sea as a fisherman.

He added: “The course gives people the chance to obtain the mandatory courses required by law without having to pay.

“We ran successful courses last year in Amble resulting in many of the trainees going to sea as commercial fishermen and one bought his own boat and licence and is now fishing out of Amble as a part-time commercial fisherman.

“The certificates obtained would be sea survival, fire-fighting, first aid, basic health and safety and care of the catch.

“The course also includes basic navigation, seamanship and various other subjects connected with deep-sea fishing.”

Anyone aged from 18 to 55 can attend the course. Once completed, participants will be issued with a credit-card-sized, plastic, new-entrant fisherman photo-ID card from Seafish, evidencing their achievement.
