Strong pedigree bull and commercial sheep sales were among the highlights of the busy spring selling season at Harrison & Hetherington’s mart centres.
Sales for 10 pedigree breeds were held from the end of April to the end of May, with a total of 1,020 animals going under the hammer in Carlisle.
Sales director Scott Donaldson said: “The Charolais sale was the stand-out, with a particularly strong trade. Prices and clearances were among the best we’ve seen for some years.”
There were 1,400 head of quality breeding cattle up for auction during May and significant sales of dairy and store cattle.
The May sheep trade has been particularly strong, especially for prime spring lambs which has followed through with a buoyant trade for ewes and lambs
May recorded prices around 10 per cent to 12 per cent higher than this time last year.
