A couple who took redundancy from HMP Northumberland have taken on two new businesses.

Julie and Paul Miller, who live at Hadston, have taken on a complete career change after launching a photo-booth business and taking on an Amble beauty salon.

And it is a family affair with Julie’s daughter, Lauren Manion,21, running the Naked Nun salon on Leazes Street.

Julie, who originally comes from Seahouses, said: “We both took redundancy from the prison and the salon came up at just the right time.

“We started trading on April 1 and it is going really well.

“Lauren is absolutely chock-a-block the whole time, I can’t believe how busy it is.

“I’m not a beauty person, what with working at the prison, but I didn’t appreciate quite how popular it is .

“At the moment we are just carrying on as it is although we have brought in a few new treatments that Lauren is trained in that weren’t there before.

“We have got a St Tropez spray-tanning booth in which has been really well-received,

“The salon itself is so small that it is difficult to expand but it is busy enough at the moment to have another staff member in there.

“We are the only salon offering spray tanning in Amble as well which is good for us.”

And Julie and Paul have launched Crazy Pix - a photo booth company which can go to weddings and special events and take pictures of people with props and different backgrounds to add a different element to any occasion.

“We picked up on it in February,” Julie said.

“But Paul didn’t leave the prison until April 1 so we didn’t start it until then.

“We did a couple of freebies and it has gone from strength to strength.

“We can do loads of different pictures and it’s really good.

“It’s a massive change for us really going in to beauty and pictures and it has taken some setting up.

“It has been a bit stressful taking the salon over and everything but we seem to be soldiering on and getting in to the run of things now.”
