A retired police officer is following new leads with her new animal-friendly walking and home visit service.
Roxy Bird clocked up 23 years of service in the local area with Northumbria Police.
When she retired in 2013, she wanted something more to fill her time and has started her new business Happy Doggie with her husband Brian.
Roxy has owned and trained her own dogs for the past 30 years so it seemed natural for her to start Happy Doggie, a dog walking service which also provides a home visit service for cats and pooches alike.
The home visits are a great alternative for animal owners who don’t want to put their prized pet in a kennel or cattery while they are away.
Roxy said: “Dogs are my life and passion and my days would be empty without them.”
One of the main problems Roxy and Brian had with previous dog walkers or home stays was that they found it difficult to find a reliable professional when she was in the service and worked shifts.
Roxy said they could never plan their social life without first knowing if a dog walker could accommodate them.
She added: “Getting away for a weekend break would be a nightmare if the dog sitter couldn’t fit them in. With that in mind and the flexibility we have, we decided to set up Happy Doggie.”
All of Roxy’s dogs are from working breeds so it was important to keep the dogs fit, active and mentally challenged throughout their lives so she applies that training into Happy Doggie.
In addition to all this experience, Roxy felt it was also important to have the correct credentials and qualifications in place for the business.
She took a K9 first aid course which covers everything from CPR to broken bones. The couple are also CRB checked with public and personal liability insurance.
To complete the package, all pets can be transported in a special pet taxi which Roxy said is an important part of the service.
“Being responsible for someone else’s pet is a serious business and here at Happy Doggie we want to assure you we are professional and qualified.”
