A local butchers’ has fried up a gold-award hat-trick in a regional heat of a national barbecue competition.

Turnbull’s of Alnwick won three awards in the North East regional heat of the 2015 Butchers Q Guild national BBQ competition.

The business struck gold with its traditional pork sausage, Mighty Chilli speciality burger – an 8oz spicy burger developed purposely for a local restaurant – and Bourbon Marinated Beef Steak in the speciality BBQ product category.

This newly developed product is a sandwich steak flavoured with chillies and fresh coriander. “It has an intense roast beef flavour with the tenderness of a traditional steak,” explained Mark Turnbull, who runs the Market Street shop and is the current national chairman of the Butchers Q Guild.

Mark said: “Entries have increased this year, such is the prestige of winning a Q Guild BBQ championship.

“Hopefully, the weather will warm up as the 2015 BBQ season gets into full swing and one thing’s for sure – Q Guild butchers come well equipped to cater for al fresco aficionados nationwide.”

Almost 300 products from Q Guild butchers nationwide were entered for this year’s competition.

The success comes only a few months after Mark took the helm as national chairman of the Butchers Q Guild.

The 43-year-old was born and bred in Alnwick and started working at the family business at 16, after leaving the Duchess’s Community High School in 1987.

Turnbull’s, one of Alnwick’s oldest surviving businesses, was established in 1880 by Mark’s great-great grandfather, Roger Turnbull, and has since been run by successive generations of the Turnbull family.

Turnbull’s won the North of England Butchers Shop of the Year in 2010 and 2011 and was chosen as a champion in the Q Guild’s Smithfield Awards.
