Burns night tribute lights up Berwick
The Royal Border Bridge was lit in saltire blue and white lights tonight in honour of Scotland's most famous poet.
Photographer Dave Sanderson, who lives in Berwick, captured this image of the bridge with the special lighting to mark Robert Burns birth date.
The railway viaduct was built between 1847 and 1850, when it was opened by Queen Victoria. Designed by Robert Stephenson, it was built for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway and is still in regular use today, as part of the East Coast Main Line. Despite its name, the bridge does not in fact span the border between England and Scotland, which is approximately three miles further north.
Also known as Rabbie Burns, the Bard of Ayrshire, the poet and lyricist is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide.
