A community radio station is celebrating its 10th birthday and its dedicated volunteers are appealing for the perfect present – funding!

Alnwick-based Lionheart Radio will be toasting the special milestone with a 24-hour live broadcast this weekend.

And the 107.3FM station has also launched a £5,000 online fund-raising appeal to help boost its coffers.

Lionheart has a licence to broadcast for at least another five years, but it faces annual running costs amounting to more than £14,000. So the volunteer-run station is looking for financial support.

One of the directors Simon Greener, who also has a regular show, said: “Our online fund-raiser is looking to help keep Lionheart broadcasting well into its 10th year, and beyond.

“We’re all volunteers and our never-ending problem is how to pay the bills – the big three are rent, licences, insurance. They cost £14,400 each and every year, and money doesn’t just drop into our laps.

“It would be a marvellous birthday present if people could donate to the cause.”

The station, based at The Centre, on Fenkle Street, turns 10 today, but the real party is at the weekend.

From 9am on Saturday, the volunteers will take part in the live 24-hour broadcast. During the day on Saturday, Lionheart will have a stall in the Market Place and will broadcast to people in the cobbled square.

Simon believes it is a ‘pretty major thing’ for Lionheart to reach its 10th birthday, saying it plays an important community role; providing local news and views, a range of music and shows and the chance for a mix of people to get involved and try their hand at presenting.

Lionheart, which also broadcasts via its website to attract listeners around the world, is looking for volunteers. To donate, visit ing/lionheartradio2017 or for details,
