British Legion branch sets new standard

Warkworth and Amble District branch of the Royal British Legion marked the end of Armed Forces Week by dedicating a new standard to reflect its growing membership.

The flag was dedicated at a special morning service held at St Lawrence’s Church, Warkworth, on Sunday, officiated by vicar Margaret Hobrough.

Chairman of the branch, Jeff Watson, led the parade to lay down the old standard to the custody of the church accompanied by the standard bearer of Newbiggin branch, Sgt Kidger.

Alan Wade, standard bearer of Warkworth and Amble District, carried the new dedicated standard out of the church at the end of the service with cadets from the Royal Marines and Royal Navy based at Training Ship Kelly, Hebburn, forming the ceremonial guard.

The next meeting of the branch will be held in Warkworth Memorial Hall on Thursday, July 12, at 7pm.

The speaker will be Mr D Shoemaker, who will give a talk on HMS Leeds Castle during the Falklands War. Visitors welcome.
