BOOK: A good tale, but nothing more

I read with great interest about the new book on Bertram of Bothel and look forward to reading it. However, it is what it is '“ legend with no truth in it.

To start with, the particular Bertram had no brother, and the depiction in the Hermitage is of the Nativity.

The legend was written by a bishop called Percy, who wished to prove he was one of the Percy family.

They, however, would not accept this as his family were trades people.

It makes for a good tale, exciting, sad and gallant, but that is all it is.
