BLYTH TALL SHIPS: Visitors encouraged to book parking spots

Visitors heading to the North Sea Tall Ships Regatta Blyth are being encouraged to book parking spaces in advance.

Up to 30 Tall Ships are expected to gather at Blyth for the event which takes place over the August bank holiday weekend – August 26 to 29 – and features five zones of free family entertainment.

Provision for parking at the Regatta includes Park and Ride facilities situated to both the north and south of Blyth with regular shuttle bus services to the main event area in the town.

Limited Park and Walk options are also available.

Advanced purchase tickets for both the Park and Ride and Park and Walk are available at a discounted rate.

The only event parking available in the town centre will be for Blue Badge holders and spaces must be reserved by pre-booking.

A reservation ticket and Blue Badge associated with a person in the vehicle should be clearly displayed when using the two designated Blue Badge car parks.

Northumberland County Council, in partnership with the Port of Blyth and Sail Training International, is hosting the prestigious Regatta with Fergusons of Blyth the Principal Sponsor.

Coun Val Tyler, Cabinet member for arts, leisure and culture at Northumberland County Council, said: “The Regatta is a wonderful event likely to attract a lot of visitors and we know that the August bank holiday will be a very busy weekend on the roads.

“Using the Park and Ride will help minimise traffic congestion for residents and visitors, and our message to motorists is: if you are travelling from the north of Blyth, please book into the ‘Park and Ride North’, and if you are driving from the south, please book into the ‘Park and Ride South’.

“Regular shuttle buses will take visitors right to the heart of the event so the Park and Ride is the easiest way to get to the Tall Ships Regatta and pre-booked tickets are available at a discounted rate.”

Tickets for Park and Rides North and South, and the ‘Park and Walk’ car park can only be pre-purchased online at Ticketline. An e-ticket or a print-at-home ticket will be exchanged for Park and Ride tickets on the day.

Martin Lawlor, chief executive, Port of Blyth, said: “We want visitors to the Tall Ships Regatta to have a great visit to Blyth and we strongly recommend that motorists book a parking ticket in advance.”

Pre-purchased discounted tickets are £5 per vehicle per day (plus 50p booking fee).

Organisers recommend that visitors driving to the Regatta should ignore the sat nav and follow the yellow ‘Park and Ride’ signs to the relevant North or South car park on their approach to Blyth from the A19 or A189.
