The frontage of the Brewers Arms on Marygate has been given a major makeover, complete with an attractive sign recognising its links with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB).
Landlady Margaret Straughan said: “We just wanted to show our appreciation for the KOSB.
“We get a lot of the veterans in here on Minden Day and the pub used to be a popular place for the soldiers when they they were stationed at the barracks.”
In those days it was known as the Heavy Battery in recognition of its army links and it is still popularly referred to that name today.
The refurbishment has been carried out by pub owners Greene King Belhaven.
“The work has been received really well by our customers,” said Margaret. “It certainly helps to lift the look of the high street.”
It has been a pub since 1905 although it was a brewing house before then and also has a distinctive art deco-style glazed frontage.
