Benefit fraud case

AN Alnwick woman, alleged to have claimed thousands of pounds in benefits after failing to give notification of a change in circumstances, has been committed to Newcastle Crown Court.

Lisa Anderson, of Clayport Gardens, faces a charge of failing to declare a notifiable change of circumstances. It is claimed that between June 15, 2003, and January 20, 2009, she knew that there had been an improvement in her physical capabilities which would affect her entitlement to benefit under any provision of relevant social security legislation, but dishonestly failed to give prompt notification to the Department for Work and Pensions in the prescribed manner.

She appeared at Alnwick Magistrates Court on Monday but magistrates declined jurisdiction on the case. Anderson, 40, did not enter a plea and is on unconditional bail.

The case has been adjourned until March 23 for it to be formerly sent to the crown court.
