Belford man sails through training for the Royal Navy

A Belford man has completed a tough first phase of training with the Royal Navy.

Trainee Naval Air Engineer Gareth Davies, 20, joined HMS Raleigh in Cornwall in November.

He has now completed an intensive 10-week course designed to teach him skills he will rely upon throughout his career.

Gareth, who will be working towards his degree in engineering, could be called upon to play a vital role in land based operations so has undergone training in basic combat skills which includes survival in the field.

The course culminates with a passing-out parade when successful recruits march out before their families and friends.

This took place at HMS Raleigh on February 17 and was a very proud moment for Gareth, but also his girlfriend Amy, mum Lyanne, dad John, grandma Anne and grandad George.

Not only were Gareth and his trainee colleagues awarded Lead Guard at his parade, they also competed against another group of recruits for the Ganges Trophy which they were awarded for their hard work and determination throughout their 10-week programme.

Gareth said: “The course had many highs and lows and has been mentally, physically and emotionally draining but also rewarding.”

Gareth now goes onto HMS Sultan, Gosport to complete his next phase of training.
