Beadnell WI, Meeting

It was a pleasure for Beadnell WI to have a return visit from Andy Griffin, local historian. He gave us a fascinating talk at our October meeting about the Delavals.

We learned that this family had, over the centuries, developed nationally important industries based on the port of Seaton Sluice and the Northumberland hinterland.

Hard working and earnest as many family members were, it was amazing that others were utter spendthrifts, who dissipated the vast fortune that their relations had earned.

Andy gave the account in an interesting and thought provoking manner. Members, who have visited the Delaval legacy in the form of the grand hall and estate, were intrigued by having their eyes opened to unusual aspects of what the facade had concealed.

Our business meeting gave us news of a very enjoyable lunch out at the Sea Salt Cafe in Beadnell, with the prospect of another to come in November at The Horseshoes in Rennington.

President Pat Brand gave thanks to those members who had organised weekly coffee mornings throughout the summer, which have been very successful as social and funding events.

Members were given information of available courses, International Day and a Christmas Carol Service in Berwick.

There was also welcome news of a recently started guitar class for young people, being held in our hall.

On November 10, our meeting will be addressed by Mr Tony Brown, manager of the Bondgate Practice, who will speak of recent developments in the local NHS and answer any questions that arise. Members of the public are welcome to join us.

The competition for October was won by Denise Salisbury, with Jan Brunt and Annette Manning as runners-up. Wendy Clark won the raffle.
