The venue for Bamburgh WI’s February meeting was Bellshill Farm Education Centre, and our hosts Mr and Mrs Renner offered us an excellent facility with wifi connection to have our IT workshop.
Before the meeting commenced our president asked members to pause for a moment to remember Shirley Porteous, who had served loyally and long both as a Bamburgh WI committee member, and on the Northumberland Federation executive. We were fortunate to have her as our president for many years and we had all shared many fun and challenging activities with Shirley.
During the business section, members heard the dates for the next quiz night and the lunch club. The sand sculpture challenge for all institutes with the theme 100 Years of the Women’s Institute will take place on June 8.
This year the Women’s Institute as a whole celebrates being in existence for 100 years and in 2018 Bamburgh WI will celebrate its 100 years. With this in mind, the institute was delighted to receive an enthusiastic and encouraging letter from Francis Armstrong in reply to our letter requesting that we hold our celebration in Bamburgh Castle.
Preparations for this significant event will be on going over the next couple of years.
We then had to switch our minds to the present and today’s technology.
Hala from Age UK, ably assisted by Elizabeth, proceeded to assist us in the many and various skills needed to make the most of any IT equipment we happened to own. Some knew nothing and gazed at the price of the equipment they were lent with apprehension whilst other ‘proud’ owners attempted to update and improve their skills.
The conclusion from this work shop is that many of us need one to one tutorials and we are hoping to hold another workshop, with this in mind, in our new programme.
Our next meeting is on March 11, when Margaret Smith will be instructing us in an Eggstravaganza workshop. Visitors and friends are welcome to join us. The venue to be announced before this meeting.
