Considered one of the most popular musicals to ever hit Broadway, the society has risen to the challenge and rehearsals have been in full swing since last September.

But this year marks a special return for two of the leading players, Anthony Stoker and Arlene Cadman, long-term members of the society, who are reprising the same roles they played 24 years ago when the society first presented My Fair Lady back in 1994.

Anthony once again takes the leading male role as Professor Henry Higgins, while Arlene plays Mrs Higgins, the professor’s high society mother.

Another popular member of the society, Leonie Dial, returns to take on the leading lady’s role of Eliza Doolittle, the Covent Garden flower girl who wishes to better herself by learning “how to talk more genteel like”.

Fans of the society still rave about Leonie’s 2015 debut in Oliver and her award-winning portrayal of Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act, and this production is set to be equally as popular as ticket sales are already doing very well.

As well as seeing regular faces tread the boards, the society has a long history of welcoming newcomers to its ranks, and this year is no different, with four principle roles taken by newbies – Stuart Archer and Mark Stenton step up from the chorus line to take on their first principle roles as Colonel Pickering and Alfred P Doolittle, while James Grieve and Susannah Clapcott (Freddy Eynsford Hill and Mrs Pearce the house keeper) are completely new to the stage.

In the director’s chair this year is Kathryn Curry, who, with 37 years of theatrical experience under her belt, is confident that the audiences will be singing the show’s tunes all the way home after each night’s performance.

And with Musical Director Peter Brown at the helm, the band will be certain to hit the right note every night.

With such classic tunes as Why Can’t The English, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, The Rain In Spain, On The Street Where You Live and Get Me To The Church, its easy to see why My Fair Lady has become such a favourite among musical theatre fans.

The show runs from Tuesday, March 20 to Saturday, March 24, at Alnwick Playhouse.
