Another tanking for the Town as Willington go nap

Alnwick went into the game with a few defeats behind them.

They beat Willington away earlier in the season so the opposition were looking to reverse that result!

The pitch was very heavy and the referee said it was just playable and after the game he said that if it had rained for a further 10 minutes, play would have been abandoned.

At the end of the game, the Club wished he had!

The game was only 10 minutes old and Alnwick found themselves two goals down.

The first was a result of poor marking and allowed William Preston to shoot, giving Town keeper Callum Brooks no chance.

The second came from an Alnwick throw in, just inside their half, when the throw was taken the ball slipped out of the hands of the Alnwick player as he was about to release it; it spun sideways, the referee waved play on and two Willington forwards faced an Alnwick defender, no contest as Anthony Lee took advantage to score number two.

Alnwick pushed forward and pushed Willington back into defence and as a result a right wing pass from mid-field into James Jackson saw him release Darren Riddle, whose shot hit the crossbar.

Soon after, with the Willington box crowded, the visiting keeper Jack Patton saved with his legs without knowing where the ball was.

Alnwick continued to press without any real scoring chances, but just before half-time their task was made all the more difficult when Anthony Lee made added a third for the visitors, putting them well in control at the break.

The second half was played in increasingly treacherous conditions.

Darren Riddle was again the danger when his shot was cleared off the goal-line.

Willington went back onto the attack and scored their fourth when Correy Nicholson ran across the face of the defence and hit a cross-shot for number four.

Number five followed with the same player netting five minutes before the final whistle.

Alnwick had a good spell of pressure midway through the second half, but again failed to make it count.

The old adage if you don’t put them away, you won’t win was very true in this case.
