Northumberland County Council’s energy-switching scheme is opening for another round this week, giving residents the opportunity to make savings on their electricity and gas bills.

Ready to Switch first launched in November 2011 and has seen more than 10,000 Northumberland residents register to receive electricity and gas contract offers. The scheme works through collective purchasing, which enables county residents to join together with other communities across the UK, as a single powerful buying unit to negotiate a deal for cheaper energy.

The last round of the scheme, which took place nationally in January and February, saw participants receive the best offer yet, with 98 per cent of those who registered able to make a saving. Across the UK, 15,717 families saved a total of £4,367,381, an average of £283 per switching household, in this auction round.

The offers made by the winning suppliers, E-On and Scottish Power, were better than those available on the open market, so Northumberland County Council is urging residents to sign up and see what savings they could make. Registration is completely free and without obligation, so you have nothing to lose.

Coun Scott Dickinson, business chairman for Northumberland County Council, said: “The council has played a major role in helping residents save money through this scheme. I would like to encourage everyone who hasn’t already to sign up. You never know the savings that could be made.

“The scheme is also open to small and medium enterprises in Northumberland. The more people who get involved and register, the greater the negotiating opportunities the scheme has and the greater the likelihood that householders and businesses will receive a better tariff and reduced energy bills.”
