A former factory worker from Amble is celebrating after winning the £100,000 top prize on the National Lottery Cash Multiplier Scratchcard.
Lisa Hewitson, 43, bought the winning National Lottery Scratchcard last month, less than a week after finding out that she had been made redundant from her job at a fish factory.
It also followed her mother-in-law’s chance dream that the family would come into money.
The mum-of-two, who has worked all of her life, is now looking forward to becoming a housewife, as well as enjoying the extra time that she’ll have to walk the family’s Border Lakeland Terrier.
Commenting on her win, Lisa said: “I’ve had a run of bad luck over the last couple of years, having been made redundant twice - the second time on Friday 13.
“When I found out that I had lost my job I didn’t know how I was going to manage.
“My partner is well paid, working as a Fire Proofer on the rigs off the coast of Aberdeen, but I was worried about not having my own income and I had started looking at other career paths to explore.
“I quite often buy a National Lottery Scratchcard but I never win more than a few pounds.
“The day that I won I was saying to my daughter ‘why can’t it happen to me?’ and then, boom, walking back from the paper shop I revealed the top prize.
“My daughter was walking just ahead of me so I shouted her to check that I wasn’t imagining things - I just couldn’t believe my eyes.” Lisa’s partner of 22 years, Colin Connor, had been home on leave for just four days when she won. When she walked into the living room with the winning ticket she burst into floods of tears as she broke him the good news – he initially thought that she was acting and that it was a joke scratchcard.
Although the news is still sinking in for the couple, they have celebrated with a few drinks at their local pub.
As well as putting aside some money for their two children, they plan to pay off their mortgage and give their house a complete makeover, including a new roof and new bathroom.
Lisa will also be taking Colin, a huge Elvis fan, to Graceland in Memphis – somewhere they’ve always wanted to go.
Lisa added: “The children have been fantastic - we’ve offered to pay for our eldest’s holiday with his friends but he has insisted that we spend it on ourselves, so we’ll put some aside for them both.
“My daughter finished her GCSEs this summer and starts a course in animal management in September so we’ll use some of the money for a deposit for her first ever bank account.”
Lisa bought her winning scratchcard from Littles Newsagents at 58 Queen Street, Amble.
