He told last week’s meeting of Amble Town Council: “It is the worst piece of road in my patch at the moment. It is dreadful and it needs to be resurfaced.”

Coun Watson is a town councillor as well as county councillor for Amble West with Warkworth.

l Volunteers from the town council, Amble business club and the town’s development trust are being requested to open and close the toilets next to the Tourist Information Centre, on Queen Street, on a Saturday.

Clerk Elaine Brown said that the request has come about because the county council has run out of overtime provision.

l The town council is in talks with the county council’s neighbourhood services team about a short-term contract for maintenance at Paddlers Park.

This would be for 24 weeks, to include weekends and three days a week, and the aim is to have someone in place for Easter.

The meeting heard that the employee could possibly do other jobs in the town.

l Deputy mayor Coun Jane Dargue has made an impassioned call for Amble to have a neighbourhood plan.

She said: “It is something we need to look at and I think we should have a steering group, not just with Amble, but with neighbouring towns and parishes. We need an overall blueprint for the long-term future of our town and I think it is shortsighted not to have one.”

The issue will be discussed at the next town council meeting, which takes place on Thursday, March 10, at Fourways 2, from 6pm.
