Because I Am a Girl was the title of Martin Tuckwell’s presentation to Alnwick Centre WI.
He gave a most thought-provoking and interesting talk on the lack of girls’ rights and choices, not only in undeveloped countries but nearer to home.
Education seems to be the answer. Plan UK – started by two journalists in 1937 – is seeking to implement this.
Written response from actual children who had been helped confirmed that money given to this cause actually reached the correct destination.
Sylvia Taylor gave a vote of thanks to Martin.
After tea, members were thanked for their help during the coffee morning when enough money was raised to ensure solvency for the next year.
A report was given on the Group committee meeting also reports on the enjoyable visits to Rothbury WI and Lesbury WI.
The Northumbrian News was noted with special mention of future events at Cresswell House, the WI centre at Seaton Burn. Some members were interested in attending and benefitting from an awareness/safe driving course.

Alnwick Centre future events are a visit to Brizlee WI, an annual outing, this year to Auckland Castle on August 7, and a ‘go on the bus’ day to Amble on the 10am bus on July 31.
Strawberries and cream were this summer’s raffle prize, also flowers and savoury dips.
The next meeting will be at 7.30pm on Thursday, September 11, when Kate Alport will show and talk about her embroidery.
