Alnwick athletes in junior championships

Last Sunday saw the hosting of the NECAA Track and Field Championship at Gateshead Stadium. It's the region's biggest such event of the year involving athletes of all ages.

Ollie Telfer was the first of the Alnwick athletes to compete running the 800m in a very strong field of athletes. Ollie who is in his first year of the U15 finished 11th with a personal best time of 2 minutes 31s.

The Championship allows younger athletes, should they wish, to move up an age group to test themselves and try new events. This opportunity enabled Finlay Telfer to take on his brother Ollie in the U15 boys hammer throw. Not having a throwing enclosure in Alnwick meant the two athletes were restricted to practising in big empty fields! However, their improvisation paid off and both won medals, Ollie taking the gold with a throw of 14.94m and Finlay the silver with 8.46m.

Peter Skirrow couldn’t match his recent excellent form in the long jump but still managed to win the U20 mens category with a jump of 6.07m. Peter performed better in the mens javelin competition taking silver medal position with an excellent throw of 34.32m.

Finally, Finlay Telfer achieved his second throwing medal of the day in the U13 boys shot put, he finished third with a personal best throw of 5.29m.

The North East Athletic association hosted an excellent event which attracted a record number of athletes. It was well supported and the volunteers and officials who ran the two day Championship did a fantastic job.
