Within the Northumberland Federation, WIs are arranged in 17 groups and a convenor is appointed to each one.

Our convenor is Barbara Thompson and there are six WIs in our Hotspur Group, consisting of Alnmouth, Amble, Lesbury, Brizlee, Longhoughton/Boulmer and Shilbottle.

It happened to be Alnmouth WI’s turn this year to host the Hotspur group meeting so Janis Crook, our president, warmly welcomed all our fellow members, with a special mention to Amble, which is a newly-formed WI.

After consideration, when organising the event it was decided the theme was to go global and have a tapas evening so Outcook of Alnwick was approached and arranged to demonstrate the art of making tapas.

Its chef Mary Wilkinson, of Rothbury, who also does fine dining and is known to one or two members who have been to her classes, was the demonstrator so we sat back to enjoy both the making of them and, of course, the tasting.

Being a little worried not knowing how many or the size of the tapas, our WI decided to add a little to the supper so we did a selection of both savoury and sweet canapés, washed down by sangria, so hopefully no one went home hungry.

The meeting was in the Hindmarsh Hall, our usual location, suitably decorated in the colours of Spain, and it was very well attended by all our fellow Hotspur Group members.

It was good to see so many familiar faces around the tables, and by the crescendo of voices there was no shortage of conversation.

Janis thanked everyone for joining us for this annual meeting, including Jo Dickson who is our WI Adviser from Stannington, Outcook and Mary Wilkinson, who helped make our evening a success.
