ALNMOUTH UNITED 1

After having eliminated Premier Division opposition in the previous round of the League Cup, Alnmouth failed to get past First Division Felling in this tie as a disputed last gasp winner squeezed their opponents through.

The poor playing surface made for a poor spectacle as both sides struggled to find any rhythm and the opening goal on 35 minutes was a fitting scrambled effort from Louis Meach.

Although unconvincing, the visitors had threatened on a couple of occasions in the first half as ‘keeper Phil Creed pulled off impressive saves to deny Andy Murray and Liam Jefferson.

The trend was to continue after the break as Creed went one better, keeping out Jefferson’s decent penalty, awarded for handball, while a similar looking incident at the other end, luckily for the visitors, went unpunished.

The leveller did eventually arrive however with 15 minutes remaining when Danny Donohoe’s pace and strength down the right preceded his far post cross to the arriving Jonny Graham whose towering pinpoint header at last found the net.

Preparing for extra time, Alnmouth were undone when a ball over the top was exploited by Liam Barnett, who was allowed to run on and slot past Mick Ashurst.
